Windows Security Center: A Look at Windows Vista Security Introduction

Windows Security Center is where your Windows operating system displays all of the security issues in one convenient place. Our colleague Joli Ballew has explained very nicely the features of the Security Center Hp Pavilion Dv6500 Battery, but I would like to take another look on the “security” side, rather than the “management” side.

Windows Vista has more security features than any other Windows system as Joli rightly puts it.

Firewall: This something that must be up and running at all times. Leaving Firewall turned off and going on to the Internet is the same as leaving your home’s door wide open and going to a long holiday. You can configure your firewall to accept connection from installed programs (P2P, Torrent, Games) which may use their own ports but do not forget that each port you allow connection means a security risk.

Automatic updating: This is the same as the Firewall, which always shall be up to date. Your computer automatically will download the updates from Microsoft for vulnerabilities, patches, fixes, improvements. Depending on your computer usage, we always suggest to leave this option as “automatic” but you can choose to download and install updates manually. In any case, do not forget to install all the updates as soon as they are ready for download.

Malware protection: Ten years ago we had viruses Hp Pavilion Dv9000 Adapter, now we have Trojans, spyware, dialers, cross-site scripting and every other malicious thing. To prevent yourself against these threats, you have to have an overall computer protection program, such as Norton 360, ZoneAlarm Security Suite etc (of course all updated). in addition to the Firewall. Malware Protection checks all your antimalware applications and advise you if they are all up to date or not.

Other security settings: This tab is about Internet Explorer’s Internet security settings and the User Account Control Settings. Think twice before making a change here: you might be taking on additional risks or you might be restricting your Internet surfing too much.

Security Notifications

We know that security notifications, although they are for our own good buy laptop batteries, can be annoying sometimes. Disabling these desktop notifications is easy. Go to the Vista Security Center and click on “Change the way Security Center alerts me” (screenshot on the left, inside the red rectangle.) In the dialogue box, which has three options “Yes, notify me and display the icon”, “Don’t notify me but display the icon” and “Don’t notify me and don’t display the icon”, select the one that you want. But, what I personally recommend the last option, which is telling the computer not to warn you. You can always compromise your whole system by a fix that you have forgotten to download.
